WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Acquire the necessary seamanship skills to safely and properly operate a power boat. By passing an exam, students will earn their Florida Boating Safety Education Identification Card along with a National Safe Boating Council Certificate covering modules 1-4.

Classes meet daily 9:00 am – 3:30 pm.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Total: 60 Hours / 10 Days
This course is a 60 hour, ten day program for students 11 to 17 years of age. It is designed to:
- Teach young men and women the skills required to operate a small power vessel.
- Impart to them the importance of safety, environmental responsibility, and the dangers of boat operations while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Prepare the student to take the Florida State Boating Basics Exam.
- Pool Demo – Hands on practice using safety equipment such as life vests, survival suits, life rafts & more.
- Learn at the Helm Hands-on Instruction while underway.
- Minimum class size is 4 and the maximum is 16 students.
Course Description
Seamanship, Safety & Environmental Concerns
- Proper use of safety equipment
- Navigational Rules and Legal Requirements.
- Preparation of a vessel for getting underway.
- Practice in basic knots, bends, and hitches.
- Practice in-line handling techniques.
- Environmental concerns.
- Basic vessel systems.
- Review and practice vessel procedures prior to getting underway.
- Running compass courses underway.
- Basic navigational chart reading and aids to navigation while underway.
- Emergency procedures while underway (man overboard, fire at sea).
- Inland navigation run to refine boat handling and navigational skills.
Pool Demo – Students will practice safety equipment usage such as:
- Life vests
- Survival suits
- Life rafts
Hands-On Instruction – Students will get to:
- Dock and undock
- Maneuver in close quarters
- Anchor
- Double anchoring techniques
- Practice over-board maneuvers
- Line Handling
- Man overboard skills
Admission & Tuition
Persons attending the 10-day program must be between ages 11 and 17 and in good health. Each student is required to furnish his/her own deck shoes.

- The Registration Form must be completed and signed (by a parent or guardian if the applicant is younger than 17) and returned to the Chapman School along with the full tuition payment.
- Tuition includes books, supplies, and laboratory fees.
- Tuition does not include housing, board, or transportation.
- All costs are payable in U.S. currency only.
- The Chapman School accepts Discover, Visa, Master Card or American Express.
- If a credit card is used as the method of payment, a convenience fee of 3.0% of the total amount charged will apply to all transactions.
- To register for class please complete the Registration form below and submit by email to info@chapman.org or via fax to (772) 283-2019.
Refund Policy
- If registration is not accepted by the School, all payments made will be refunded promptly. If cancellation is requested within three (3) business days after signing the Registration Form, all payments will be refunded in accordance with the buyer’s right to cancel.
- If the School cancels the program due to insufficient student enrollment, I may be rescheduled for a future class, or all payments made will be refunded.
- In the event that I am unable to attend the class for which I am registered the following change/cancellation policy will apply:
- If notice is provided to the School more than 7 business days before the class start date to reschedule, a one-time change may be allowed
and a $50.00 transfer fee will apply. The rescheduled class must be taken within the currently scheduled Youth classes, or all tuition will be forfeited.
- If cancellation is requested more than 14 days before the class start date the portion of the tuition which is non-refundable will be forfeited, however if cancellation occurs less than 14 days before the class start date, all tuition will be forfeited.
- Applicable refunds are made within thirty (30) days.
Certification
Students will receive reading assignments and lectures to help prepare them to pass the State of Florida Boating Safety Exam and upon successful completion will earn their State of Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card.
In addition, students will receive a course completion certificate from Chapman School which states the student has met the standards of certification and course requirements for National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) On-Water Training Modules 1 – 4.
Continuing Education
Upon completion of our NSBC Youth Certification Program, you may wish to continue your boating education with our Youth Summer Advanced, Voyager, or Power Boat Handling (Age limits apply – See course brochure for details).
