WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Private Power Boat Handling immersion course is designed specifically for those who wish to improve their close quarter
maneuvering skills.
This 6 hour, hands on program is conducted on board a Chapman School training vessel of up to 32 feet in length*.
Taught by professional U.S.C.G. licensed captains utilizing Chapman School’s “Learn at the Helm” method of teaching, the skills learned are fundamental requirements for the competent boater.
Successful completion of the Private Powerboat Handling earns the student certification on either a Twin Inboard vessel or a Twin or Single Outboard vessel. This valuable program is highly regarded by experienced and novice boaters alike.

2025 CLASS SCHEDULE
Classes are considered private lessons. This means you will be one-on-one with an experienced captain.
You can bring another person for an additional cost.
You provide us with several dates to choose from and we can make it happen based on captain availability.
Classes run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm with 1 hour lunch.
Course Description
The 1 day/6 hours of underway instruction will be held on a vessel that is either: Twin or Single Outboard; or Twin or Single Inboard.
Your course begins with a dockside vessel orientation and pre-departure inspection followed by close quarters maneuvering practice including:
- Docking and Undocking in a protected slip, bow and stern first.
- 360 degree turns in tight quarters.
- Coming alongside a facing pier (such as a fuel dock), both port and starboard to.
- Backing down 100 yards in a narrow channel
- Docking bow and stern first with only one engine operable.
- Docking and undocking using spring lines.
Instructors will also cover:
- Vessel safety procedures.
- Proper use of VHF marine radio.
- Understanding and using Navigational Aids and Basic Rules of the Road.
Admission
- Minimum Student age is 15.
- Registration Form completed and signed (by parent/guardian if under 18) and returned to the school with a copy of a valid photo ID.
- Payment of full tuition is due with registration
- Additional students must pay a non-refundable $200 tuition deposit.

- Payment of the full tuition is due with the completed Registration Form and a copy of an Official Photo ID.
- Tuition includes books, supplies, and laboratory fees.
- Tuition does not include housing, board, or transportation.
- All costs are payable in U.S. currency only.
- The Chapman School accepts Discover, Visa, Master Card, or American Express.
- To register for class please complete the Registration form below and submit by email to info@chapman.org or via fax to (772) 283-2019.
Transfer / Refund Policy
- If the application for Registration is not accepted by the School, all payments made by the applicant will be refunded.
- If cancellation is requested within three(3) business days after signing the Registration Form, all payments will be refunded in accordance with the buyer’s right to cancel.
- If the School cancels the program, I may be rescheduled to a future class, or all payments made will be refunded. In the event that I am unable to attend the class for which I am registered, the following change/refund policy will apply:
- If cancellation is requested more than three (3) business days after signing the Registration Form but, before the beginning of classroom instruction, the applicant is obligated for the non-refundable Tuition Deposit.
- Where notice is provided to the School more than fourteen (14) days before the start of class, a student may transfer to another class (if available), upon payment of a $50.00 transfer fee.
- Where notice is provided to the School less than 14 days before the start of class to cancel, or if the applicant does not arrive for the scheduled class, or if the applicant wishes to withdraw from class once classes have begun, the applicant may be obligated for the full amount of the tuition.
- If a credit card was used as the original method of payment, a convenience fee of 3.0% of the total amount refunded will apply for all transactions.
- Applicable refunds are made within thirty (30) days.
Other Travel Considerations
If you are traveling to the School from outside of Florida we strongly suggest you purchase refundable airfares or arrange trip cancellation insurance.
On-Campus Housing
Student Housing
Description
Campus housing consists of dormitory apartments. Each unit contains a bedroom, convertible living room/bedroom, bath, kitchenette and a covered porch. The number of students per unit during this program is a maximum of two. All units are air-conditioned, fully furnished, and equipped with a refrigerator, countertop range, and cooking utensils. Housing is offered on a space-available basis. The School is not responsible for the loss of any personal property. Sorry, no pets.
Housing Fees: (Shared Rate)
For a second or third person in the party add $20 per night/per person.
Housing fee includes utilities.
Housing Refund Policy
- Housing fee is due 30 days prior to the start of class to reserve accommodations.
- If a student cannot attend the class in which he or she is registered, housing fees are refundable.
- Once a student moves into the facilities, no fees will be refunded.
- If a credit card was used as the original method of payment, a convenience fee of 3.0% of the total amount refunded will apply for all transactions.
- In the event any student does damage to the accommodations, he or she will be responsible for the replacement cost and labor required to repair the damaged Chapman School property.
