Our young people are our most precious resource. With this in mind, the Chapman School provides courses for youth with career goals as well as for competent recreational boaters.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Total: 30 Hours / 5 Days

This course is a 30 hour, five day program for students 14 to 17 years of age. It is designed to:

  • Build on the skills acquired in the Summer Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced programs.
  • Teach young men and women the skills required to safely plan and navigate a coastal offshore voyage.
  • Prepare the student to qualify for Chapman School’s Summer Voyager Certificate.
  • The minimum class size is 3 and the maximum is 6 students.
  • Class time is 8:30 am – 3:30 pm Monday – Friday.

 

Prerequisites:

In order to enroll in our Youth Summer Voyager Program, students must have previously completed our Youth Summer Basic, Intermediate & Advanced Programs.

Course Description

    Seamanship, Safety & Environmental Concerns

    • Review advanced navigational rules.
    • Review navigation, chart reading, dead reckoning, compass, time speed and distance, latitude and longitude.
    • Basic marine electronics.
    • Line handling including spring lines, docking and undocking.

    Voyage Planning- Students will prepare for the voyage covering the following topics:

    • Rescue techniques
    • Safety equipment
    • Survival at sea

    Hands-On Instruction – Students will train on a power vessel and will complete the following hands on training:

    • Review navigation,piloting skills, aids to navigation and rules of the road,
    • Learn about additional saety equipment required for a voyage.
    • Complete full pre-voyage systems check.
    • Undertake 2- 6 hour voyages coastal & near coastal.
    • Accrue 2 days of documented sea time for students competing the course.
    • CLASS IS FROM 8:30 AM TO 3:30 PM.
Admission & Tuition Fees

    Persons attending the 5 day program must be between ages 14 and 17 and in good health. Students need basic math skills and completion of Summer Advanced Boating for Youth. Each student is required to furnish his/her own deck shoes.

    • The Registration Form must be completed and signed (by a parent or guardian if the applicant is younger than 17) and returned to the Chapman School along with the full tuition payment.
    • Tuition includes books, supplies, and laboratory fees.
    • Tuition does not include housing, board, or transportation.
    • All costs are payable in U.S. currency only.
    • The Chapman School accepts Discover, Visa, Master Card or American Express.
    • If a credit card is used as the method of payment, a convenience fee of 3.0% of the total amount charged will apply to all transactions.
    • To register for class please complete the Registration form below and submit by email to info@chapman.org or via fax to (772) 283-2019.

    Refund Policy

    • If registration is not accepted by the School, all payments made will be refunded promptly. If cancellation is requested within three (3) business days after signing the Registration Form, all payments will be refunded in accordance with the buyer’s right to cancel.
    • If the School cancels the program due to insufficient student enrollment, I may be rescheduled for a future class, or all payments made will be refunded.
    • In the event that I am unable to attend the class for which I am registered the following change/cancellation policy will apply:
      1. If notice is provided to the School more than 7 business days before the class start date to reschedule, a one-time change may be allowed
        and a $50.00 transfer fee will apply. The rescheduled class must be taken within the currently scheduled Youth classes, or all tuition will be forfeited.
      2. If cancellation is requested more than 14 days before the class start date the portion of the tuition which is non-refundable will be forfeited, however if cancellation occurs less than 14 days before the class start date, all tuition will be forfeited.
    • Applicable refunds are made within thirty (30) days.
Certification

    A Chapman School certificate of completion is awarded to students who complete the course. The Summer Voyage students will also receive a letter certifying completion of 2 days of documented sea time.
